TREE REMOVAL

Our crew and equipment are optimized for efficient tree, bush, and hedge removal. Tree removal involves the above-ground portion of the tree only (stump grinding is detailed below). If you haven’t seen it done before, our tree climber will generally use a belt and spurs to climb the tree, taking the branches off on the way up. Once at the top with no branches remaining, the tree climber cuts the trunk off in short sections on the way back down. Using this general method, the tree is dismantled in safe, manageable chunks, reducing the risk of damage to surrounding property. Occasionally there is enough room for the tree to be safely felled in one piece from the ground, but this is not common in the city. The trunk can be left standing at any height (some people use them as landscaping features), but most will opt for having the stump cut off as low as possible – This is generally 1-3″ above the dirt. Bringing in a stump grinder to further reduce the stump is optional, and detailed below.

Branches are chipped on site directly into our chip truck before being hauled away. All fine debris is cleaned up using rakes, brooms and blowers, leaving your yard very nearly as tidy as before (and sometimes more so!). The trunk wood is typically cut into firewood lengths and left on the curb or in the alley to be picked up within 1-3 calendar days. We maintain a database of people who use firewood, and notify one of them when it becomes available; That way this valuable resource does not get “wasted” in the landfill. If you prefer, same-day firewood disposal is available, and of course if you would like to keep the firewood you are welcome to do so.

If you have special concerns about how a tree removal may impact your yard, house, or neighbourhood, please give us a call (403 220 0007) or email and we’ll be happy to discuss alternative approaches that may leave a smaller footprint.

STUMP GRINDING

As detailed above, the tree removal portion of the work concerns only the above-ground portion of the tree. If you would like the stump ground at and below the surface of your yard, we will bring in one of several top-of-the-line machines and our expert operator will grind the stump into mulch. For greater efficiency, our stump grinder operates on a schedule separate from our tree removal crew: The stumps are generally ground 1-3 business days after trees are removed (barring weather delays, etc.).

Depending on the size of the stump, you will be left with a little or a lot of stump mulch, neatly piled in the hole where the stump was. This material will settle over time, so it is important that at least a small mound be left in place otherwise you will eventually be left with a depression where the stump was. Excess mulch from the stump grinding can be removed from the site as an option, but most prefer to deal with it themselves (stump mulch is useful material for landscaping and gardening, or can always be disposed of in your green bin).

If you have roots showing on the surface and you would like them ground as well, we are happy to do so. If you have an old stump that you would like ground, of course we can get to these, too.

Stump grinding is optional: Some choose to leave the stump in the ground and let it rot away, but be advised that this can take many years due to Calgary’s generally dry conditions. The root systems of some species of trees are prone to aggressively sending up suckers (new shoots) after the tree has been removed above ground – In our experience, grinding the stump is the best way to prevent this. In some cases you would still get some suckering, but the effect is drastically reduced. It will diminish and disappear in future years if you simply snip off the offending shoots before they can establish themselves and start feeding energy to the remaining root system.

We do not offer or recommend stump killing services through the application of toxic substances. The results of poisoning stumps are not guaranteed, but the potential hazards to children, pets, wildlife and surrounding vegetation are very certain.

If you have questions about stump grinding, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at 403 220 0007 or email here.

SELECT PRUNING, THINNING, AND TRIMMING SERVICES

We have always been removal specialists, but once our customers saw how tidy and efficient our work was, we quickly started getting requests for other tree-related services as well. We are happy to help with a limited selection of pruning, thinning, and trimming services. If your needs include trimming for clearance (to sidewalks, service lines, fences, gutters, etc.), thinning (reducing the density of branches within the tree’s canopy), structural pruning (removing select branches to improve a tree’s form and/or health), raising or lowering the canopy (trimming low-hanging or topmost branches, respectively), deadwooding (removing dead branches from throughout the tree), removing black knot, or reducing the footprint of a tree (trimming from around the perimeter),  we can probably help you out. If you’re not sure, please give us a call (403 220 0007) or email and we’ll be happy to chat about your needs.

We focus on providing the best value for our core operations: Removals and select trimming services. We take great pride in our reputation, and we don’t take on work for which we are not sure of the results. We do not offer tree planting, transplanting, sculpting, cabling, bracing, tying (drooping branches), pollarding, or the application of any poisons.

DON’T TOP YOUR TREES

Please note that we do not offer or recommend “tree topping” services. This was a regular practice in years past: Cutting a major portion of the top of a tree off completely, commonly seen applied to evergreen trees that the owners wanted to shorten. This is no longer a professionally acceptable practice, for many reasons. It is a short-term solution that creates serious long-term problems. There is a lot of information on this available online, but here is a quick summary: From an economics standpoint, it winds up costing the you more in the long run to maintain a “topped” tree than it does to remove the tree entirely and plant a more appropriately-sized species for the location. From a safety standpoint, topped trees almost always regrow with multiple tops, none of which are as well-attached to the main trunk as the original top was. They are MUCH more likely to break off during a windstorm or wind/snow event – The number of examples of this seen during last year’s endless windstorms here in Calgary was truly alarming. Moreover, topping is not good for the tree’s health. But don’t just take our word for it: A quick search online will provide a wealth of information on the hazards of this outdated practice. Remember: Tree topping is a short-term solution, creating long-term problems. DON’T top your trees. Please.
